To our Wonder Lake Community friends and family,
The Wonder Lake Patriotic Celebration is an event supported entirely by volunteers and donations, with an annual budget of more than $25,000. If this were a normal year, our planning and fundraising would have been going on for months. However, 2020 is anything but normal.
With businesses closed, employees furloughed, and the statewide stay-at-home order in place, we have not even been able to start fundraising. It is doubtful we’d have the opportunity to collect money on the street corners any time soon, and given the stress businesses are under we cannot expect them to support the event this year as they’ve so generously done in the past.
Our typical attendance is roughly 5,000 people – viewing the parade, visiting food vendors, getting together with friends and watching the fireworks – all in very close quarters. In addition, our town has a large population of seniors and other at-risk populations – and we have an obligation to protect these people - our acquaintances, friends and neighbors.
Sadly, it seems the stars are aligned against us this year. The Coronavirus is affecting everyone in one way or another, and the most important thing we can all do right now is starve this virus of people to infect - the sooner we do that, the faster we’ll get our lives back.
This week the Patriotic Celebration Committee made the extremely difficult decision to cancel all events for 2020. We cannot find a way to move forward with the festivities without serious concerns for the well-being of our community. This virus spreads so easily, and we have no way to safeguard crowds at the parade, beaches, and many private parties traditionally held that weekend. We know this is a difficult time, and we were looking forward to a big celebration as much as you were – this was not a decision any of us took lightly.
Any fundraising we’re able to squeeze in after things return to normal will be put toward the 2021 celebration – and we plan on making next year’s events bigger and better than ever! For now, stay at home, stay safe and healthy.
